Manmohan Dhar English are very fond of under-statement. Describing Kashmir in a tourist magazine, an Englishman stated as follows : If you have seen Switzerland, Black forests of Germany, Tyrol in Austria, Lake Districts of Scotland and if you can think of all these places at one and the same time; you will get some idea of what Kashmir is like. A greater tribute to Kashmir, I believe, has not been paid. Kashmiri language is the product of unparalleled beauty of Kashmir, its flowers, fauna, lakes, rivers, mountains, birds, beasts, men, women and weather, all vying with each other, in the words of Swami Vivekananda, for excellence. He, further, states that there is no country like this anywhere in the World. Kashmiri language as it is today is an amalgam of Sanskrit, Persian, Hindi, Urdu, English and ancient dialects having their origin in antiquity. Without going into the details of its origin, one can safely say that like the people of Kashmir, Kashmiri language has also been stifled by persecution. None-theless this language became the vehicle of the greatest minds, poets, savants and saints of Kashmir. Names are legion. It has features singularly its own. In Kashmiri love poetry, it is always the woman that addresses her lover. Laleshwari, Nunda Rishi, Parmanand, Rupa Bhavni, Haba Khatoon, Arnimal, Wahab Khar, Mahmood Gami, Samad Mir, MasterJi, Krishna Razdan, Mahjoor, Shamas Faqir, Nadim and many others, too numerous to recount here, have covered a wide range, covering spiritual realization, philosophy, pangs of love, political aspirations, social inequity, beauty of Kashmir and many other aspects of every day life. Flowers, birds, brooks, mountains, snow, waterways have been accomplices in their total quest for a full life. The bracing climate of Kashmir and the overwhelming surfeit of beauty of nature and the people around expressed itself in their temperament and their language.
Using data from various sources for 1997-2001, we estimate that at least four- to five times more horticultural produce, by value, was sold in domestic markets than in international export markets. If produce consumed on the farm is included, the domestic share rises to 7-8 times that of the export market. Value added in domestic markets post farm gate ; was at least three times that in the export sector. Horticulture in Smallholder Livelihood Strategies: Production and sales at the farm level of all the major horticultural crops in Kenya are quite concentrated. Fifteen percent of rural households account for about 80% of all horticultural sales. Concentration is higher for individual crops: in all but one of the top 10 crops, 5% of the rural population accounts for at least 50% of production and at least 70% of sales. Bananas and sukuma wiki are the least concentrated both geographically and at the household level. Improvements in production and marketing of these two crops would have the broadest impacts on income levels and poverty rates. Carrots, french beans, macadamia nuts and oranges are the most concentrated. For these crops, a private sector led strategy of focused assistance to relatively few growers on production and marketing constraints could be most effective in boosting production and sales. Such a strategy would not be effective in oranges unless the citrus greening problem is first addressed. Households selling the most horticultural produce are better off than other households based on a wide range or indicators. Yet this group still earns a slightly higher income share off the farm than they do through horticultural sales, suggesting substantial continued income diversification. A potential implication is that, if marketing costs and market risk can be reduced and farm level productivity increased, this group of households may be well poised to take advantage of expanding market opportunities through greater specialization. Regional Competitiveness: Marketing cost budgets Volume II ; show that Tanzanian oranges and, especially, onions are very competitive in the Kenyan market. Farm budgets for onion also demonstrate Tanzania's advantage in this crop: costs of production in that neighboring country are lower by 20-50%, gross margins per acre of land are higher by 60300%, and gross margins per bag are higher by 15-150%. These results are driven by yields that are 45-100% higher in Tanzania and seed costs that are one-tenth those in Kenya. Higher quality of irrigation in that country may also contribute to Tanzania's advantage, and superior onion storage infrastructure at the farm level allows it to supply the Kenya market throughout the year. Conclusions and Recommendations: Fresh fruit and vegetable production and marketing value chains are becoming increasingly important to a broad array of Kenyan consumers. These also hold potential market opportunities for important segments of the smallholder farming community. Expanding domestic and regional markets for Kenyan horticultural produce and integrating the country's smallholder farmers into profitable supply chains that satisfy these markets will require investment in three key areas: technical production constraints, "hard" and "soft" market infrastructure , and the legal and regulatory environment. Recommendations regarding technical production constraints the focus of this Volume ; focus on consolidating the country's succe ss in reducing banana diseases, dealing with citrus greening disease in a cost effective manner, and improving adaptive varietal research in the context of a revised seed law that encourages the production of Quality Declared Seed at the village level.

1-12-019 K C Zinn Junior Plant Sciences "To Rot Or Not" Potato Susceptibility To Pink Rot, Phytophthora erythroseptica The purpose of this project was to compare two early-maturing russet potato varieties, Russet Norkotah and CO95086-8RU for their susceptibility to the soil-borne fungus, Phytophthora erythroseptica, commonly known as pink rot. Over half of the potato acreage planted in the San Luis Valley is Russet Norkotah and known to be quite susceptible to this pathogen which in turn can cause a significant economic loss to the farmer. The CO95086-8RU has been exclusively released by Colorado State University to a private grower in the San Luis Valley for evaluation. A trial setting in a field known to have a high inoculum level of pink rot was a prime location for this experiment. Four replications of each variety were planted, observed throughout the growing season, harvested, stored and evaluated for the damage caused by pink rot. Although both varieties exhibited symptoms and each potato with pink rot was rated at the highest level on a severity index chart, the CO85086-8RU overall outperformed the Norkotah with an average of .12 percent decay compared to the latter of .62 percent decay. In conclusion, the results of this particular trial were clear cut. The CO95086-8RU compared with the Norkotah sustained less damage and the economic loss was far less. Though this study is one on many that is being conducted comparing these two early-maturing russet varieties by the grower, with further evaluation the CO95086-8RU could be a significant choice for San Luis Valley Potato Growers. Daniel Wiener Neil Roper Junior Plant Sciences The Effects On Plants When Treated With Positive And Negative Attention Our question is: does a corn plant's physical appearance amend when given positive and negative attention? Our hypothesis was that through giving positive attention to one plant and negative to the other, the plant treated with positive attention will survive well and the other will dry out and die. Our methods were first to buy two identical houseplants. The second step was to start shouting and playing negative music to one plant and show positive attention and music to the other. The third thing to do is record the data every three days and describe what the plant looks like, the amount of dead leafs, and its color. The final step is to compile data into two graphs. One graph shows the average leaf color with a key ; and the other graph shows how many dead leafs. Our hypothesis was correct. Every few days a couple more leafs would die for the plant treated with negative attention and rarely would a leaf die or turn brown for the plant treated positively. The leaf color for the plant treated negatively changed regularly and many leafs turned brown. Only one or two did this for the positively treated plant. Our conclusion was if one plant was treated negatively and an identical plant was treated positively, the plant treated negatively would die and the other would live healthily. This can help the world because places like farms can broadcast peaceful music throughout the farm, which will result in healthier plants. Dopamine and Serotonin Dopamine and serotonin are neurotransmitters that influence mood and appetite. Ovarian hormones affect the synthesis and uptake of neurotransmitters, which can result in the manifestation of physical and behavioral symptoms of PMS. Estrogens may suppress the action of dopamine, which is a major hormonal modulator of the homeostatic balance of the active amines important for creating relaxation and mental alertness. Dopamine exerts an inhibitory effect on prolactin secretion and influences the adrenal glands and kidneys, preventing sodium. LINCOCIN is absorbed rapidly after a 500 mg oral dose, reaching peak serum levels of 2-3 micrograms ml in 2 to 4 hours, which then diminish to approximately 1 micrograms ml in a further 4-8 hours. Doubling the dose increases but does not double the peak serum levels. Food in the stomach reduces total absorption as well as peak serum levels. Urinary recovery of drug in a 24-hour period ranges from 1.0 to 31 percent mean: 4.0 ; after a single oral dose of 500 mg. Bile is an important route of excretion. Significant levels have been demonstrated in the majority of body tissues. Although the drug is not present in significant amounts in the spinal fluid of normal volunteers, it has been demonstrated in the spinal fluid of one patient with pneumococcal meningitis. Intramuscular administration of a single dose of 600 mg produces a peak serum level of approximately 9-11.5 micrograms ml at 30 minutes with detectable levels persisting for 24 hours. Urinary excretion after this dose ranges from 1.8 to 24.8 percent mean: 17.3 ; . The intravenous infusion over a 2-hour interval of 600 mg of LINCOCIN in 500 ml of 5 percent glucose in water yields therapeutic levels for 14 hours. Urinary excretion ranges from 4.9 to 30.3 percent mean: 13.8 ; . The excretion of lincomycin in urine and bile does not account for all the administered dose and a substantial proportion of the drug appears to be inactivated in the body, presumably in the liver. The biological half-life, after oral, intramuscular or intravenous administration is 5.4 + 1.0 hours. Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis do not effectively remove lincomycin from the blood and noroxin.

Cold ; . When LINCOCIN is prescribed to treat a bacterial infection, patients should be told that although it is common to feel better early in the course of therapy, the medication should be taken exactly as directed. Skipping doses or not completing the full course of therapy may 1 ; decrease the effectiveness of the immediate treatment and 2 ; increase the likelihood that bacteria will develop resistance and will not be treatable by LINCOCIN or other antibacterial drugs in the future. Diarrhea is a common problem caused by antibiotics which usually ends when the antibiotic is discontinued. Sometimes after starting treatment with antibiotics, patients can develop watery and bloody stools with or without stomach cramps and fever ; even as late as two or more months after having taken the last dose of the antibiotic. If this occurs, patients should contact their physician as soon as possible Laboratory Tests During prolonged therapy with LINCOCIN, periodic liver and kidney function tests and blood counts should be performed. Drug Interactions Lincomycin has been shown to have neuromuscular blocking properties that may enhance the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents. Therefore, it should be used in caution in patients receiving such agents. Antagonism between lincomycin and erythromycin in vitro has been demonstrated. Because of possible clinical significance, the two drugs should not be administered concurrently. Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, Impairment of Fertility: The carcinogenic potential of lincomycin has not been evaluated. Lincomycin was not found to be mutagenic in the Ames Salmonella reversion assay or the V79 Chinese hamster lung cells at the HGPRT locus. It did not induce DNA strand breaks in V79 Chinese hamster lung cells as measured by alkaline elution or chromosomal abnormalities in cultured human lymphocytes. In vivo, lincomycin was negative in both the rat and mouse micronucleus assays and it did not induce sex-linked recessive lethal mutations in the offspring of male Drosophila. However, lincomycin did cause unscheduled DNA syntheses in freshly isolated rat hepatocytes. Impairment of fertility was not observed in male or female rats given oral 300 mg kg doses of lincomycin 0.36 times the highest recommended human dose based on mg m2 ; . Pregnancy: Pregnancy Category C Teratogenic Effects: There are no studies on the teratogenic potential of lincomycin in animals or adequate and well-controlled studies of pregnant women and omnicef. After Henry had recovered and stumbled from the bathroom to the leather couch in his living room, he closed his eyes tight and tried to remember the last few days. His battery-powered alarm clock he'd ordered from the Sharper Image catalog said it was Sunday. He thought he'd gone to bed the night before--but it wasn't the night before. Of course, the clock could be wrong, but that had to be unlikely. It was advertised to be set by an atomic clock from Greenwich and accurate for 100 years. The demon had probably been right. Henry sat up and moved to his generator. The TV Guide Channel would show the day--and time and TV listings for over 350 channels, but Henry didn't want those right now. He pulled the ripcord three times, finally started the generator, and turned on his TV. Henry grabbed his remote control and changed channels, but every network--NBC, TLC, TWC--was the same: nothing was airing. Some networks were broadcasting the colored bars of the TV test pattern, some were showing nothing but noisy black and white static, but every time Henry sampled something new offered by his digital cable service, he tuned to a dead channel. Yet the date and time in the lower right hand corner read Sunday 9: 27 A.M. Henry sat on the couch, remote in hand, and cycled through all his available channels for some sign of life. Nothing. He cycled again, and repeated his circuit, until his thumb hurt and he feared the gas in his generator--already half empty yesterday, or, rather, Friday--might be running dangerously low. He shut off his generator, put on some old clothes, and went into his garage. Henry grabbed his four gas cans--empty as he'd already known--and arranged them in his wheelbarrow. He directed the wheelbarrow to the side door of his garage and pushed it outside. The Shell gas station was only a five-minute walk away, through his backyard and that of the house behind his, across the street, around the corner and past the construction site for the new strip mall that now seemed very unlikely. We placed the excised ventricle in a watch-glass, containing an equal quantity of the frog's blood and a one per cent. solution of common salt. We emnployed a solution of extract of amanita muscaria in 5, and a 1 in 400 solution of sulphate of atropia. In these four experiments we found that after the ventricle was stopped by extract of muscaria, on the application of atropia pulsations returned, became good, and continued on an average four hours. The solution of amanita muscaria has a faint acid reaction, and we thought it possible that the arrest of the contractions might be due to the acid reaction. In the three last experiments therefore, when the heart was stopped we added a two per cent. solution of carbonate of soda, but without exciting any contractions; we then added the solution of sulphate of atropia. On many occasions we found on excising the ventricle with the auriculo-ventricular groove attached, that the contractions soon ceased. Failing to reveal having been a victim of a spousal abuse or even failing to reveal having met the defendant.61 Jurors fail to respond honestly during voir dire, among other reasons, because of: nerves, a desire to serve that outweighs the desire to tell the truth, or because voir dire questions are "too trivial to merit an honest response."62 Some may even hope to use their jury experience as anecdotal fodder for future conversations with friends.63 "Most research indicates that approximately twenty-five percent of jurors fail to reveal material information during voir dire."64 So when can a party get a new trial based on a juror concealing material information during voir dire? Nevada's standard holds that "a juror's intentional concealment of a material fact relating to his qualification to be a fair and impartial juror in the case may require the granting of a new trial."65 "Where it is claimed that a juror has answered falsely on voir dire about a matter of potential bias or prejudice, in the final analysis, the termination turns upon whether" the juror committed intentional concealment, the determination of which, is left to the sound discretion of the trial court.66 "The states vary, .in their approach to determine intentional concealment; some use an objective test, while others use a subjective test. States using an objective test will look to see whether a reasonable juror would have disclosed the information during voir dire. States using a subjective test will look to see whether the juror in question acted honestly and in good faith."67 In Lopez, the Nevada Supreme Court refused to overturn the denial of a new trial motion based on a two jurors' failure to reveal that they had been the victim of child abuse.68 There, both jurors, when questioned if they had been the victim of child abuse answered no, but did so, apparently, because neither associated the child abuse they endured to be a crime.69 The Nevada Supreme Court agreed with the trial court that this reasoning revealed no intentional concealment.70 Nevada jurisprudence since Lopez has had varied results; in one instance upholding a new trial motion denial where a juror again mistook the meaning of what a crime was and later overruling the trial court denial of a new trial motion where a juror failed to reveal that his father had been murdered when asked if he or family member had ever been a victim of a crime.71 and vantin. The results are presented in Table 6. Notwithstanding the non-specific nature of qualitative tests, the results generally reflect the status of neomycin residues in milk since data provided by the sponsor demonstrated that residue depletion for neomycin was slower than for lincomycin following intramammary infusion with Lncocin Forte Sterile. Large variations in the duration and number of positive tests were observed, however, no positive results occurred with the Brilliant Black Reduction test in samples taken 84 hours after the last infusion or later. False-positive results for mastitic milk were observed with the Penzym, Valio T101, and Dutch Tube Diffusion tests. Table 6. Recognition, detection, isolation and cohorting of confirmed and suspected cases, and implementation of droplet precautions. General Principles of Routine Infection Control The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America SHEA ; states three goals for infection control and prevention programs: protect the patient; protect the healthcare worker, visitors, and others in the healthcare environment; and accomplish the previous two goals in a cost-effective manner, whenever possible 4 ; . These goals are germane to any patient care setting including acute care hospitals, long term care facilities, nursing homes, ambulatory care centers, outpatient surgical facilities, rehabilitation centers, alternative care centers, and home-care programs. Each type of health care organization may employ a different means of achieving these goals based on their needs, circumstances, and federal, state, and local regulations 5 ; . The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee HICPAC ; have developed guidelines on prevention of nosocomial healthcare associated infections that are based on the latest epidemiologic information on transmission of infection in hospitals 5 ; . These guidelines include "Standard Precautions" that are to be followed when caring for all patients, regardless of their diagnosis, and "Transmission Based Precautions" to be followed when a patient is known or suspected to be infected or colonized with an epidemiologically important pathogen. Standard Precautions address the importance of hand washing before and after caring for a patient; use of gloves, masks, eye protection, face shields, and gowns when splashes or sprays of blood, body fluids, secretions or excretions are possible; cleaning of patient-care equipment, the patients physical environment, and soiled linen; precautions to reduce the possibility of healthcare worker exposure to blood borne pathogens; and patient placement. Transmission Based Precautions describe infection control measures, above and beyond Standard Precautions, that should be taken based on the mode of transmission of the pathogen causing infection. There are three routes of transmission that play a significant role in nosocomial infections: contact, droplet, and airborne. All of these routes of transmission are relevant to influenza and should be incorporated into influenza control, including during a pandemic. Further details regarding Standard Precautions and Transmission Based Precautions can be found in the "Guideline for Isolation Precautions in Hospitals" 5 ; . CONTACT TRANSMISSION , the most frequent mode of transmission of nosocomial infections, occurs when there is direct body surface-to-body surface contact and transfer of microorganisms from an infected or colonized person to a susceptible host or when a susceptible host comes in contact with a contaminated intermediate object such as a health care workers' hands or a contaminated instrument. DROPLET TRANSMISSION occurs when an infected person generates large droplets containing microorganisms by talking, coughing, or sneezing and these droplets move through the air and come in contact with a susceptible host's conjunctivae, nasal mucosa, or mouth. When caring for patients with suspected or confirmed influenza, droplet precautions should be followed. AIRBORNE TRANSMISSION is similar to droplet transmission but in this case, the particles from the infected or colonized person are much smaller and therefore can remain in airborne for long periods of time and can be widely carried by air currents to susceptible hosts some distance away. General Principles of Pandemic Influenza Infection Control in Health Care Organizations As a part of pandemic planning, communities and health care organizations will need to have in place special guidelines for infection control during a pandemic that take into account the. SACRAMENTO Moving California's presidential primary from June to February next year would force candidates to appeal to a population that more closely resembles the rest of the country, rather than focusing on the traditional early contests in New Hampshire and Iowa, a state senator said Wednesday. The bill seeking to switch California's primary to Feb. 5 cleared the Senate Elections Committee on a 3-0 vote. California's traditional June primary has left the state virtually irrelevant in the presidential nominating process, although candidates regularly visit to raise money.

Involved in obscurity, we may be pardoned if we indulge ourselves in various speculations both as to our beginning and our end. "Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting; The soul that rises with us, our life's star Hath had elsewhere its setting, And cometh from afar; Not in entire forgetfulness, And not in utter nakedness, But trailing clouds of glory do we come From God who is our home." [4] Unfortunately many have attempted to compound for wickedness in life by purity of belief, a vain and fruitless effort. To do right is the sure ladder which leads up to Heaven, though the true faith will help us to find and to climb it. "It is my duty to have loved the highest, It surely was my profit had I known, It would have been my pleasure had I seen." But though religious truth can justify no bitterness, it is well worth any amount of thought and study. I hope I shall not be supposed to depreciate any honest effort to arrive at truth, or to undervalue the devotion of those who have died for their religion. But surely it is a mistake to regard martyrdom as a merit, when from their own point of view it was in reality a privilege. Let every man be persuaded in his own mind "Truth is the highest thing that man may keep." [5] To arrive at truth we should spare ourselves no pain, but certainly inflict none on others. We may be sure that quarrels will never advance religion, and that to persecute is no way to convert. No doubt those who consider that all who do not agree with them will suffer eternal torments, seem logically justified in persecution even unto death. Such a course, if carried out consistently, might stamp out a particular sect, and any sufferings which could be inflicted here would on this hypothesis be as nothing in comparison with the pains of Hell. Only it must be admitted that such a view of religion is incompatible with any faith in the goodness of God, and seems quite irreconcilable with the teaching of Christ. Moreover, the Inquisition has even from its own point of view proved generally a failure. The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church. "In obedience to the order of the Council of Constance 1415 ; the remains of Wickliffe were exhumed and burnt to ashes, and these cast into the Swift, a neighboring brook running hard by, and thus this brook hath conveyed his ashes into Avon; Avon into Severn; Severn into the narrow seas; they into the main ocean. And thus the ashes of Wickliffe are the emblem of his doctrine, which now is dispersed all the world over." [6] The Talmud says that when a man once asked Shamai to teach him the Law in one lesson, Shamai drove him away in anger. He then went to Hillel with the same request. Hillel said, "Do unto others as you would have others do.
